American Airlines Baggage Policy

As per the American Airlines baggage policy, the passengers are allowed to take along a piece of carry-on baggage, one carry-on item, one personal item, checked baggage, overweight bags, and the sports equipment. There is a fee charged as per the terms and conditions of the fare type for the checked baggage, overweight baggage, and sports equipment. The American Airlines baggage allowance and requirements are different for the carry-on and checked baggage, read below to understand the American Airlines baggage policy in detail.


American Airlines carry on baggage rules and requirements

The American airlines carry on baggage rules and requirements state that a passenger is allowed to have a piece of carry-on baggage and personal items which may be a camera bag, laptop bag, briefcase, or hand purse without any fees or charges.

American Airlines carry on baggage weight and size restrictions:

– The maximum allowed dimensions of carry-on baggage are 22*14*9in(45 linear inches) or 56*36*23cm(115 centimeters). The wheels and handles are also included in the calculation of dimensions.

– The carry-on baggage must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of the passenger. 

– The personal items must be of a size to fit properly under the seat in front of the passenger.

– The items such as diaper bags, jackets, duty-free items, umbrella, and assistive devices (strollers, wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, child restraint seats, etc.) are not counted as a piece of carry-on baggage.

Please note that there is no space under the bulkhead seats so the passengers must store their carry-on baggage in the overhead bin during the flight take-off and landing.

American Airlines checked baggage rules and requirements

As per the American Airlines checked baggage rules and requirements, passengers can carry 2 bags as standard, 10 bags maximum for the U.S domestic, Transpacific, and Transatlantic, 5 bags maximum for the itinerary that includes Mexico, the Carribean Central America, South America, and Brazil.

American Airlines checked baggage weight and size restrictions

The maximum allowed dimensions for checked baggage are 62 inches or 157 centimeters(length+width+height).

The maximum weight allowed for checked baggage is 50 pounds (23 kilograms) but for the destination of Brazil, the checked baggage weight allowance is increased to 70 pounds (32 kilograms).



American Airlines baggage fees/cost

As per the American Airlines baggage policy, the American Airlines baggage fee depends on the purchased fare type by the passenger, the destination, if the passenger is a U.S military personnel and/or dependent, membership with a partner carrier, membership of frequent flyer program, or the passenger has an American Airlines sponsored charge/credit card.

The American Airlines baggage fee for standard checked baggage is mentioned below as per different destinations and conditions:

  • For U.S domestic (including Puerto Rico, Canada, U.S Virgin Islands, and Hawaii)

– $30USD for the first checked baggage

– $40USD for the second checked baggage

  • For Central America, Mexico, and the Carribean

– $30USD for the first checked baggage

  • For South America

– Free for the first checked baggage

– Free for the Second checked baggage

  • For Transatlantic

– Free for the first checked baggage

           – Free for the first checked baggage

American airlines extra baggage fee

The American Airlines extra baggage fee for the different destinations is:

  • For U.S domestic (including Puerto Rico, Canada, U.S Virgin Islands, and Hawaii)

– $150USD for the third checked baggage

– + $200USD for the fourth checked baggage

  • For Central America, Mexico, and the Carribean

– $150USD for the third checked baggage

– + $200USD for the fourth checked baggage

  • For Brazil

– $85USD for the third checked baggage

– + $85USD for the fourth checked baggage

  • For South America

– $150USD for the third checked baggage

– + $200USD for the fourth checked baggage

  • For Transatlantic

–  $200USD for the third checked baggage

  • For Transpacific

           –  $200USD for the third checked baggage

American Airlines overweight baggage fee

The American Airlines overweight baggage fee is applicable for all the baggage that weight more than 50 pounds or 23 kilograms. Below are the fee and charges according to the overweight limit.

For 51 to 70 pounds/24 to 32 kilograms: $100USD for each extra baggage (excluding for the destination of Brazil and the passengers of First Class, Business Class, Aadvantage Executive Platinum, and Oneworld Emerald).

Fees For 71 to 100 pounds (33 to 46 kilograms): $200USD for each extra baggage (no overweight baggage are allowed for Transatlantic destinations and $450USD for the Transpacific destinations)

– As per the American Airlines baggage policy, no baggage exceeding 100 pounds/46 kilograms are allowed as checked baggage.


American Airlines oversize baggage fee

The American Airlines oversize baggage fee is applicable to all the baggage exceeding the size of 62 inches/158 centimeters but remains below 125 inches/320 centimeters. The fee structure for the same is described below:

– $200USD for Central America, The U.S domestic, Mexico, the Carribean, Transpacific, and South America.

– $150USD for Transatlantic and Brazil.   

– As per the American Airlines baggage policy, no baggage exceeding the dimensions of 125 inches/320 centimeters is accepted.
