WestJet checked baggage restrictions

The following items are not permitted as checked baggage by WestJet –

  • Explosives, flammable items, and hazardous materials
  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Dangerous goods like chemical gasses
  • Valuable items like jewelry, and cash
  • Fragile items
  • Important documents

Restrictions for firearms

Firearms must be declared during check-in, and they must be unloaded and placed in a locked hard-sided container. Add to that –

  • Tasers and stun guns are not permitted
  • Firearms must be carried in durable luggage. The maximum weight of the baggage per passenger must be within 5 kg
  • 2 firearms are allowed per passenger and need to be declared at the check-in counter
  • Handguns, rifles, BB guns, starter pistols, air pistols, paintball guns, and shotguns are permitted to carry
  • Automatic weapons, machine guns, and silencers are not permitted
  • Firearms are not permitted for flights to/from Bermuda, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and Mexico

WestJet Non-Standard Baggage Allowance

Archery

  • Both the bow/crossbow and the arrow(s) need to be packaged in a rigid container.
  • A set includes a bow or crossbow, an arrow quiver, and a maintenance kit.

Bicycle and helmet

  • Your bicycle must be packed in a suitable container and must go as checked baggage. 
  • The weight must be within 45 kg (100 lb.)
  • The size of the bag must be within 292 cm.

Golf clubs

  • Must be packed in a rigid hard shell container
  • Must include in-built tripods
  • Each guest is allowed one golf set, which includes golf shoes, golf clubs, and golf balls.

Parachute

  • One set is accepted per guest
  • It is prohibited to use a parachute with a compressed or explosive-style activation device.

Sports ball

  • Bowling ball must be packed in a bowling bag.
  • Volleyballs, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, and other inflatable sport balls should be slightly deflated before packing them in carry-on luggage.

Sports racquets

  • Sports racquets are also allowed in carry-on luggage if they are wrapped properly and adhere to the size requirements.

Delayed, Damaged, or Lost Baggage With WestJet Airlines

Compensation for lost baggage

In case of lost baggage, passengers are entitled to receive 2300 CAD per passenger. In addition – 

  • The airline will offer reimbursement for the toiletries and other essentials for items that are misplaced for 21 days or more. 

Delayed Baggage

Report the delayed baggage immediately at the airport. If you have left the airport, you must escalate the matter up to 12 hours after the scheduled arrival. You need to provide –

  • Contact information, a list of your belongings, and a picture of the baggage will help the WestJet representative locate your belongings.
  • After you escalate the report you will be provided the reference number that will help you track your bag.
  • You may be eligible for compensation up to 100 CAD/USD for the first 48 hours after your baggage is delayed for travel within the United States.
  • Also, an additional 150 USD would be provided after the 48 hours is over.
  • For flights to/from Europe, the WestJet delayed baggage compensation is 100 USD.

Damaged Baggage

You need to report the damaged evidence of your baggage up to 5 days after your scheduled arrival. You must take pictures of the damaged baggage –

  • You may be asked to fill out a damaged baggage report
  • If possible, provide the receipt to get fair compensation
  • WestJet’s Central Baggage Team will stay in touch with you

WestJet Excess Baggage Guidelines

Passengers are liable to pay WestJet excess baggage fee if the size exceeds 62 linear inches the weight of the checked luggage or several bags or a combination of all of them.
